Junior School Programs

Pilumn.JPG.jpg"An absolutely fantastic incursion.  Presenters were well prepared and professional in their approach.  the equipment was interesting and accessible for the children.  we all learnt a lot today!"
Dianne McCulloch - Rosewood Downs Primary - 2007

"Really well presented! The presenter was enthusiastic, the kids really responded... Great work!" R. Walker. St. Macartans Primary - 2009.

Most of our middle school programs (see Medieval activities days), are suitable for Grade 5 and 6 students.  But we do get a number of requests for presentations to grades 2 and 3, and we have tailored a couple of topics more suitable for this age group.

We have now designed a specific 'Medieval Court' role-play activity which take primary classes through the social pyramid using lots of props and action.  They are specifically designed NOT to be lecture style presentations, as students of this age need extra multi-sensory stimulation, particularly tactile involvement, to get benefit from their days.

At the simplest level a single presenter handles single or double classes for one or two periods, often taking several classes a one day.  (This is also the most cost effective approach, and is particularly popular with country schools.)

The 'Medieval Court' program has students nominate nobles, knights, soldiers, servants, jesters, and criminals then experience Medieval Society in action.  It includes elements of a court, a knighting, a punishment, entertainment, games and dances.  (Or each of those topics could be handled separately in much greater detail, as part of a larger day of rotating subjects).

Alternatively, some schools have two, three or four presenters come and rotate students through several topics.  This allows a half or full day of activities for a  year level, and allows us to spend a full period on the social pyramid, and a full period on games or dance, archery or crafts, or the Tournament.

Call, e-mail or fax us for individual quotes.

For Middle School (grades 5 & 6) topics, see our regular Medieval Activities Page.

Junior School (grades 2 - 4) Specific Topics Include:

The Medieval Court (Interactive)

Students play all the roles of a court where the queen visits a district to witness the local Earl knighting a new vassal on behalf of one of his baronesses.

Depending on the length of the period, the session covers the topics of fealty, knighting, the social pyramid, clothing and sumptuary, the punishment of wrongdoers, entertainment, and dancing.

The focus of this activity is to understand the role and inter-relations of each person in the medieval social structure.

Designed for single classes of no more than 32; this session can be done for bigger groups, but naturally loses much of it's hands on involvement.

Education and Games (Active)

Many medieval games such as Blind Man's bluff play a serious educational role for a non - literate society.

This session looks at village life from the perspective of the local Baron/ess trying to assess and assign roles for their peasants and farmers.  The games are to assess the students physical and leadership potentials (as well as just for fun).

Designed for single classes of no more than 32 at a time.

Training a Squire (Interactive)

This session role plays the training of a page, a squire, and then a knight. Students are invited to take on one of our (safely) armoured knights with blunted (rebated) training weapons.

The session is not only enjoyable, but underlines the function and significance of the knight in a feudal society.

This session can be delivered to large groups, and is often used to start or finish a day.

Weapons and Armour (Passive)

Show and tell with attitude. Developed from our Secondary session of the same name, it is a simplified version that revolves around role plays of the characters of the medieval world: knights and peasants, barbarians, vikings, archers and kings.  The class votes regularly to choose the direction the story developes.

Medieval Dance (Active)

Even more active than the Games session, the story here revolves around health  and living conditions for medieval peasants.  Another simplified version of the secondary topic of the same name.

Others which can be adapted include: Archery, Fashion & Dress, and Medieval Japan/Muslim.

Ancient History is also of interest to many primary schools, though here we prefer to work with grades 5 and 6 on the middle school appropriate topics listed separately under Ancient history Programs.  If you require an Ancient history topic for junior school, please contact us for a tailored quote.
