"Excellent presentation that
allows students to really understand through costume and timelines
were [sic] women stood in medieval society."
Santa Maria College -
2009.
"Thank you very much for a very
entertaining presentation!" Jenny Davidson, Emmaus, 2008 -
(4 periods).
"(Year 8 ) Great - need to see
how it might go for say year 11 International Politics."
Nicola Sabbadini, St Michaels
(on session at HTAA national conference
2009).
Gender studies are usually
offered as an option for senior students, or as and elective for
one or two classes at middle school level. As such this
presentation is usually a single person presentation to a small
group over one, two, or even three or four periods (see quote
above). It is sometimes included as part of one of our
medieval incursion day programs, but can be combined with a
Renaissance or Revolutions Studies or Different Cultures topic to
make a fascinating half day for level 9-12
students.
Designed around an Interactive
White-Board (we can bring our own if necessary), this topic uses
video's, props, role plays and discussion to trace through the
changing rights and roles of women in European culture and
diaspora. (Comparisons with other cultures are possible as
add-ins). A significant part is using costumes to assess the
changing focus of women's roles.
Both teachers and students have
been amazed at how different the reality of history is from their
pre-conceptions.
